Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Monday criticised the Delhi Police's decision to denotify Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, warning that the move would not stop people from raising their voices against the government.
In a post on X, Dipke said, "They have removed Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Yes, it's no longer a protest site as anyway it was turned into a war zone by the coward dictator. Ab poora desh Jantar Mantar banega!"
His remarks came after Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued a standing order on October 11, removing Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest venues and naming three alternative locations for demonstrations.
In another post on social media, Abhijeet Dipke accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of targeting the right to protest and warned that the decision could have wider implications for democratic expression.
"Today, Modi denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Tomorrow, he will denotify democracy itself. The dictator's problem was never the protest site. It was the very idea of people protesting," Dipke said.
The CJP founder's remarks came amid heightened political tensions in the national capital, with Opposition leaders protesting against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reported the PTI.
According to the standing order issued on October 11, Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi have been designated as alternative venues for protests and demonstrations.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted a committee to examine alternative locations where citizens could exercise their right to organise demonstrations. The decision to denotify Jantar Mantar was taken based on the committee's recommendations, according to the PTI.
The Delhi Police said a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for organising protests at the three new venues would be issued separately. The order partially modifies an earlier standing order dated April 28, 2022.
Jantar Mantar has traditionally been a prominent location for political protests and public demonstrations in Delhi. The decision to remove it from the list of designated protest sites has drawn criticism amid the ongoing political dispute over electoral roll revision and the functioning of the Election Commission.
