Jharkhand Police seized ganja and brown sugar worth more than Rs 52 lakh and arrested eight people during separate operations in Ranchi and Deoghar districts, officials said on Friday.
In Ranchi, three persons were arrested with 97 kg of ganja in a joint operation of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Ranchi and Nagri police within Nagri police station limits on Friday, an officer said.
"Acting on the tip-off, NCB officials with the help of Nagri police intercepted two four-wheelers and recovered a total of 97 kg of ganja from one of the vehicles. Subsequently, they arrested three persons and seized both vehicles," Ranchi Rural SP Gaurav Goswami told PTI.
In the preliminary investigation, it came to light that the seized contraband was being transported to Barhi from Odisha. NCB officials took possession of the seized contraband and took the accused into custody, the SP said.
The estimated market value of the seized ganja is more than Rs 48 lakh, another official said. In Deoghar, five people were arrested with 21 gram of brown sugar worth around Rs 4.20 lakh and Rs 5,400 in cash. The accused were nabbed during a raid in Hindolavaran within Mohanpur police station limits on Thursday.
"We arrested five people and seized 21 grams of brown sugar and Rs 5,400 in cash from their possession. All are aged between 20 and 36 years. All the accused have a criminal history, including two for similar offences," Deoghar SP Praveen Pushkar said. Further investigation is underway, he said.
