Jumping a traffic signal is a common, everyday violation in the city and is mostly ignored by the traffic police, but it proved to be the thing that landed a notorious criminal, Tillusingh Tak, in a police lock-up.

Tak, hailing from Kalyan (East), ignored a red light on the Pune-Mumbai road near Khadki police station on August 23, was chased by the traffic police and caught. It was then discovered that Tak was driving a stolen car, which made the police go in for a thorough interrogation.

Multi-city operator
What came up during Tak's interrogation left even the police surprised.

According to the Khadki police, Tak has committed numerous burglaries in the city, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Diva, Dombivli and many other cities. They said Tak had so far confessed to having committed two house break-ins in which gold and silver valuables were stolen.

Tak has been arrested in one case, in which the complaint was filed by Koshan Thompson Chang (40), a resident of Elphinstone Road in Bopodi.

Tak is a criminal on police record, said the police.

"Tak has been remanded in custody till September 6," said public prosecutor B N Kadam. "The police have recovered valuables worth Rs 4.7 lakh, including 13 kg of silver and 50 grams of gold from Tak's house in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh."

Kadam said Tak was first arrested for vehicle theft.

"The police nabbed Tak after a hot chase right from the RTO chowk to All Saint Church chowk near Khadki police station on August 23," said Kadam. "Two stolen cars, including the one which Tak was driving, were seized by the police then. After arresting Tak in a vehicle theft, he was later arrested in the burglary cases."
Assistant Police Inspector Pol from the Khadki police station is investigating the case.
