Cops took no action on complaints of threat SMSes, says slain woman's father

The father of a young woman murdered yesterday in Akurdi alleged the police had ignored all complaints of threatening text messages sent to him and his daughter over six months by the killer.

He said the accused had wanted to marry his daughter, but the proposal was turned down by the family six months ago.

Jyotsna Bagul (20) was attacked with sharp weapons while on her way to college at 8 am by her cousin Yogesh Bacchav (25), who then tried to stab and kill himself, said the police.

Jyotsna's friend Sadhana Bodase (21) was injured when she tried to save her. Bacchav is in hospital in a critical condition.

Jyotsna's father Karbhari Bagul said they had received a dozen threat messages everyday from Bacchav.

"If the police had acted earlier, my girl would have been alive today," said Bagul, the principal of the Zilla Parishad school in Nashik.

Jyotsna was studying at the DY Patil Engineering College. Bacchav worked with General Motors in Talegaon.

2 cops suspended

After the murder a month ago of Darshana Tongare, a techie working with IBM, the police had appealed to women to register complaints against people harassing them. Jyotsna had come forward to complain, but it fell on deaf ears.

"A preliminary inquiry dereliction of duty on the part of some officers," Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Jadhav.
