Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday condemned the terrorist attack in Kulgam district, saying no amount of compensation could undo the damage suffered by the families of those who had come to Kashmir to earn an honest livelihood.
According to officials, Deepak Ratray and Bopinder, both in their 20s, hailing from Chhattisgarh, were gunned down at the brick kiln where they were employed in the Kelam area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district late on Friday evening.
"Those innocent people were targeted in such a manner. The attack cannot be condemned enough," Abdullah said, announcing an ex gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh each for their families, in addition to R6 lakh each announced by the district administration.
Condemning the attack, Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai said targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity and such acts of terror have no place in a civilised society.
"The Chhattisgarh government stands firmly with the bereaved families in this hour of grief," he said while announcing the financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased workers.
He said a nodal officer will be appointed by the Chhattisgarh government to coordinate with the Jammu and Kashmir administration and oversee the process of extending all possible support to the affected families.
