ATS says Baig LeT state chief, Udgir locals know him as introvert who ran cafe

The ATS says the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) state chief who was arrested in the German Bakery blast case yesterday was running a cyber cafe in Udgir, a city in Latur district.

Mirza Himayat Inayat Baig alias Inayat Mirza alias Yusuf (29), the alleged state chief of LeT, was arrested from Mahatma Gandhi bus stand in the city.

According to reports, Baig is originally a resident of Kamwada Galli, Juna Bazar in Beed, but lived in Udgir for quite some time as he ran a cyber cafe there.

Locals in Udgir said Baig's cyber caf ufffd was called Global and had been operating from the Municipal Council Complex for nearly four months. They said Baig appeared to be an introvert during his stay in Udgir and many claimed that he used to work till late--it would be almost 2 am, often 3 am before he would call it a day.

The residents of Udgir who shared information on Baig requested anonymity. They said Baig's sister was pursuing DEd from a college in Udgir and he used to stay with her, but in January he sold the cafe to a local person and never returned to Udgir after that.

ATS officials refused to comment on whether they knew why Baig came to the city from Marathwada, but unconfirmed reports suggested that Baig was pricked up from the bus stand in Camp when he arrived to visit his sister, who stays in the area.

Other sources claimed Baig came to the city to pursue a computer course.
Investigating officer ACP Vinod Satav refused to divulge any information on this, only saying investigative agencies recovered 1,200 grams of RDX, besides a soldering gun, wires and cutters for making bombs from Baig.u00a0

Past cases

Police sources said this was not the first time Baig had a brush with the city police.

Baig's names figured in two earlier cases. In a case registered with the Lashkar police station in 2007, two arrested people, Ayaz Yusuf Shaik and Hemant Dhamale, had confessed that a person named Yusuf had provided them arms.

According to the ATS, Baig had confessed that he was Yusuf. In 2008, five people were arrested by the Mumbai ATS for unlawful activities and distributing violence-instigating pamphlets.

The ATS says Baig indoctrinated the five people arrested from Kondhwa.
