S Shivakumar, a revenue inspector in the civic body, says his neighbours are laughing at him because he can't get colleagues to clear an uprooted tree near his house

A BBMP employee took forever to get his colleaguesu00a0 to work. His neighborhood is in a mess thanks to several trees uprooted due to the rains on April 21, and the residents are looking up to him to use his 'influence' in the civic body.

"I am ashamed of myself," said S Shivakumar, a revenue inspector in Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP).

"Despite repeated attempts, I have been unable to get officials attend to my problem. I can make out from my neighbour's faces that they are not very happy with me."

Due to the rains on April 21, several trees were uprooted in the neighborhood of BBMP Revenue Inspector S Shivakumar.

Geethamma, who is Shivakumar's neighbour, confirmed that she had expected the trees to be cleared fast. "It was such a mess.

We could not move around. We thought his position as a BBMP employee would help in getting things done. We are mistaken," said Geethamma.

Shivakumar, on his part, says the ordeal has given him a clearer picture of what the common man has to suffer when he interacts with BBMP officials.

"They made me run from pillar to post after I submitted several requisitions," he said. "I didn't know it was so difficult to get work done by the BBMP. If this is what I have to suffer, I can imagine what the common man goes through."

After an endless struggle, BBMP officials have taken the trees away but the broken pavement has not been repaired so far.

When MiD DAY brought the problem to BBMP commissioner H Siddiah's notice, he said he would take action immediately. "I will speak to health and forest officers and ensure the problem is immediately solved.

I am pained to hear that the BBMP officials did not respond satisfactorily to calls for help from a civic employee.
