Sheetal Bhatija of Threads 'n' Homez designs furniture pieces that match your need, passion, personality and living space. Bhairavi Jhaveri dropped in to check out her latest projects
Letterbox for bawa family: A self-taught interior designer, Sheetal added the "Homez" in Threads sixu00a0 months after her sister Jyoti Tanwani (who handles the fashion for the brand) and mother Pushpa Khanchandani launched their first store at Khar. Now, she creates furniture items for two of the three outlets located in the suburbs, which permit her to be experimental and creative. "I take up assignments where I am in charge of doing up a complete home or a room, but I enjoy working on singular pieces too." This week, a Parsi family that trades in stocks, approached her to design a vintage letterbox that's big enough to suck in hefty annual reports. A rough sketch in her drawing book reveals an old-school letterbox with a pad lock and an angular wooden frame with the family name engraved on it.
Paint a wall in gold khadi: The cosy store filled with myriad artefacts, jewellery, furniture pieces and home decor items, is like a mini sample book for what Sheetal (and her team of 40 workers) can do for customers jigsaw photo frames, paduka table napkin pegs, a footless loveseat, a velvet footrest, a natural coconut bark candle, and more. Besides standalone pieces, one wall even shows off the different hand-painted work in gold khadi that you can play around with for room walls, tabletops and cupboards. "If you like what you see, you can buy it, or even ask to tweak the design and create a new piece to fit what you are looking for," she suggests. For instance, she tells us, a woman liked a particular kitchen dispenser but wanted a multi-purpose piece that she could hang outside her door for milk packets and miscellaneous items. So, they added a mini basket next to the kitchen roll rod, and converted the wooden flap into a nameplate.
Calligraphic dinner tables: Calligraphy is the latest style she is dabbling with, besides cutwork in stone. Recently, she created nothing short of a masterpiece, we think a wooden bookshelf in the shape of a violin with musical notes in German inscribed in bold white calligraphy. A bookshelf with a collage of authors' names is up next, she tells us.
