With the intense encounter between security forces and Naxalites in Dantewada yesterday underlining the Naxal threat once again, the state has tightened its borders with Chhattisgarh.

Senior police personnel said security and vigilance has been increased in the area close to the border to avoid a repeat of the Naxal infiltration in the state following the ambush in Dantewada in April.

A police officer from the Anti-Naxal Squad in Gadhchiroli, said, "Last time, there were inputs of Naxals moving into Maharashtra from Chhattisgarh as a search operation had been launched for them in Dantewada."

Gun battle
A heavy gun battle took place near Gunyapal village camp under Kirandoor police station limits in Dantewada yesterday after a 100-member team of local policemen, Special Task Force and Special Police Officers was attacked by around 200 Naxals. The gunfire started around noon and the Naxals began to retreat after the CRPF men and district force joined the security personnel.

K P Raghuvanshi, DGP, Law and Order said, "There was an encounter between the forces and the Naxals but no officers have been killed. The place where the incident took place is 100 km from the Maharashtra border.

However, we have alerted the security forces at the border and asked them to keep a check on the border zone."
