Maharashtra Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday criticised the BJP government over rising inflation and concerns about the financial security of ordinary citizens, alleging that the government was prioritising traders' interests over public welfare.
"People's deposits are not safe, and inflation has risen sharply, but instead of providing relief to ordinary citizens, the government is busy protecting traders' interests," Wadettiwar said.
He was interacting with teacher voters at Hindi City High School in Chandrapur as part of the campaign for Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate Advocate Abhijit Wanjari for the graduate constituency election.
Wadettiwar said rising prices of essential commodities and increasing household expenses had put pressure on family budgets. He alleged that the government had failed to prioritise the financial interests of ordinary citizens amid growing economic insecurity.
"What about the savings of ordinary people? When will people get relief from rising inflation? Who is actually benefiting from the government's economic policies?" he questioned, accusing the BJP government of pursuing anti-people policies.
He stressed that public financial security and people's day-to-day concerns needed to be given priority.
During the interaction, Wadettiwar also discussed challenges in the education sector, teachers' expectations, employment issues and concerns faced by graduates.
He described teachers and graduates as key contributors to educational, intellectual and social development, adding that their concerns and rights needed effective representation in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
He said graduate constituencies served as an important platform to raise issues related to education, employment and accountability in a democracy, beyond the electoral process.
The interaction was organised as part of the campaign for MVA candidate Abhijit Wanjari and was attended by teachers and graduate voters.
Teacher MLC Sudhakar Adbale, senior Congress leader Vinayak Bangde, Chandrapur city women's wing president Chanda Vairagade, Ramu Tiwari, Principal Narendra Bobde, Anil Shinde, Rajesh Adur, Ramiz Shaikh and Headmistress Mishra were among those present.
Last week, Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar demanded the immediate release of around Rs 3,700 crore in pending instalments under the Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Nidhi Yojana, accusing the Maharashtra government of adopting a "double standard" towards farmers struggling with drought and rising costs, an official statement said.
Wadettiwar criticised the state government for describing financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to farmers as a historic decision while, according to him, two instalments under the Namo Kisan scheme remained unpaid.
He said the pending amount should be credited to farmers' bank accounts without delay.
Wadettiwar questioned whether the announced assistance of Rs 5,000 would be sufficient for farmers facing drought, agricultural losses and rising inflation.
He alleged that the government was announcing advance relief for farmers while withholding instalments under the farmer assistance scheme. With agricultural incomes under pressure and household expenses rising, he said, farmers needed substantial financial support rather than announcements.
