Maharashtra Police have exposed a gang allegedly involved in manufacturing fake currency notes in Nashik district. The police officials further said that they have arrested five persons in connection with the case.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a bungalow at Talegaon Shivar in Trimbakeshwar taluka and seized blank paper bundles cut to the size of currency notes, chemicals, and other materials required to print notes, according to PTI.
During the operation the police officials also recovered Rs 9.75 lakh, which included 1,950 original Indian currency notes of Rs 500 denomination, an official said.
The officials also said that they have arrested five persons, identified as Amareshwar Sudhakar Aaittha, Dasari Prasad Satyai, Gokul Anandrao Date, Hiraman Punja Date, and Machhindra Bhagwan Ghandat, for their alleged involvement in the printing of the fake notes, as per PTI.
The accused were printing counterfeit currency notes with a face value of Rs 500, he said, adding that the Trimbakeshwar police have registered a case and launched a probe.
In a separate incident, cops in Nashik reportedly busted an alleged Rs 305-crore scam involving fake work orders for upcoming Kumbh Mela works, with two people arrested and several others allegedly on the run, police said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.
The accused allegedly targeted people by promising them contracts for Kumbh Mela-related work and showing them forged documents. Police said fake work orders for projects worth around Rs 591 crore were allegedly shown to complainants.
The arrested accused have been identified as Tanay Mahajan and Narendra Totaram Mahajan, an official said.
According to police, the duo and an alleged accomplice cheated a complainant of Rs 2.17 crore after promising to help him secure a housekeeping contract linked to the Kumbh Mela.
The accused allegedly gained the complainant's confidence by showing him a fake work order and a document containing a list of Kumbh Mela works, the news agency reported.
The document reportedly carried the Government of India emblem and the name of the Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority.
