Maharashtra launches Marathi training drive for non-Marathi drivers. File Pic
Non-Marathi-speaking auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra will have to obtain a Marathi language proficiency certificate by August 15, failing which they may face legal and penal action, according to the state transport department, reported PTI.
The department has made it mandatory for such drivers to complete the 'Marathi Bhasha Samvad Pathyakram', a four-hour Marathi communication course, between June 1 and August 15, 2026, as per the news agency.
To facilitate the programme, the Maharashtra State Marathi Language Department, Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad and Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh have been authorised to conduct the course free of cost.
Only certificates issued by these institutions will be recognised by the transport department, reported the news agency.
However, Gaikwad clarified that the purpose of the initiative is not to punish drivers but to encourage them to take advantage of the free training programme. "The intention is not to penalise drivers but to ensure they avail of the free training and obtain the certificate within the stipulated period," he said, reported the news agency.
Transport Department Joint Commissioner Ravi Gaikwad said extensive arrangements have been made to help drivers complete the course, reported the news agency.
A total of 71 training centres have been established across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), while around 4,500 teachers associated with the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad have been engaged for the initiative.
RTO officials are also assisting drivers with enrolment and completion of the programme, as per PTI.
According to the transport department, the initiative aims to improve communication between drivers and passengers by reducing language barriers.
As per the news agency, the department said that the programme is also expected to improve service quality and create better professional opportunities for drivers. "The main objective is to remove language barriers between passengers and drivers, improve service quality and enhance professional opportunities for drivers," the department said.
The rule that all auto rickshaw and taxi drivers must know Marathi was set to start being enforced from May 1, Maharashtra Day. However, after requests and protests, the deadline was extended.
