In a rare summer sighting, flocks of flamingos have arrived at Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary in Nashik district, popularly known as the ‘Bharatpur of Maharashtra', bringing a splash of pink to the reservoir amid April's scorching heat.

The migratory flamingos, locally known as Rohit, were spotted descending on the sanctuary on April 28, creating a striking visual across the water body at the confluence of the Godavari and Kadwa rivers. The sight is unusual for this time of the year, as flamingo congregations are typically associated with winter months.

With their long necks, pale pink plumage and black-tipped wings mirrored in the blue waters, the birds transformed the reservoir into a picture-perfect landscape, drawing the attention of birdwatchers and photographers.

A rare opportunity for birdwatchers

Officials said the flamingos are likely attracted to the sanctuary's shallow water levels and food availability, including algae and other aquatic organisms, which continue to remain favourable despite the summer season.

"This is a rare opportunity for birdwatchers and photographers. It is the result of excellent habitat management carried out in the sanctuary this year," said Krishna Bhavar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Nashik.

"Despite the heat, these flocks have added to the sanctuary's beauty and calm. Removal of aquatic weeds and development of ponds has helped attract a record number of birds this year," said Assistant Conservator of Forest Hemant Ubale.

Calling it a visual treat, Range Forest Officer Hiralal Chaudhari said, "Watching these flamingos through the morning mist or during sunset is a refreshing experience. Nature lovers should not miss this spectacle."

The arrival of flamingos has once again highlighted Nandur Madhmeshwar's importance as a crucial wetland habitat for migratory birds in Maharashtra.
