Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convenor Abhijeet Dipke on Monday accused the Narendra Modi government of waging a war against citizens to protect Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid growing demands for the poll body's chief to resign over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revision.
Dipke reached his native village, Santuk Pimpri, in Maharashtra's Hingoli district, late on Sunday night and visited the site where his grandmother's final rites were performed.
In a post on X, Dipke criticised the Delhi Police over the alleged use of force against protesters, journalists and elected representatives during the recent demonstrations in the national capital.
"Youth are being assaulted, journalists are being assaulted, even MPs are being assaulted by Delhi Police. What makes Gyanesh Kumar so indispensable to Modi that he is willing to wage war against everyone just to protect him?" he wrote.
His remarks came amid a security crackdown ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators sought Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Dipke, along with CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, was placed under preventive arrest at Delhi airport on Saturday ahead of the planned demonstration.
The three leaders were released on Sunday on the condition that they would not "breach peace" for a year, according to the report.
Their detention came amid heightened security arrangements in Delhi, where police detained protesters and opposition leaders as authorities attempted to prevent the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar.
The CJP and opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR process.
The revision exercise has become a point of political contention, with the protesters raising concerns about the conduct of electoral roll revisions and seeking accountability from the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, the CJP has renewed its call for a protest at Jantar Mantar on Sunday as police continued their heavy security arrangements, with over 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel to be deployed in the capital.
The CJP and opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls.
