22-year-olds steal bikes to secure job in marketing company that required them to own two-wheelers

Desparate for a job, three 22-year-old men stole a motorcycle each from HSR Layout on October 8 after a marketing company offered them a job provided they had two-wheelers to move about on.

The HSR Layout police took 10 days to nab the three men Raju, Ishwar Rao and Ratan after Kormangala resident Ashwin Devadiga, one of the victims whose bike was stolen, spotted Raju on his bike on the afternoon of October 17.

Devadiga and his neighbour Mohit Chandra, whose bike was also stolen, had filed a joint complaint. The FIR had been lodged on October 15.

"I was lucky that I spotted my bike," said Devadiga. "I never thought I would get it back."

Morning catch
In response to Devadiga's spotting of his bike, the police conducted an early morning check on October 18 and spotted Raju and Rao in Bellandur.

"They sped away when they saw us, but one of the bikes ran out of petrol and stopped," said Police Inspector L Y Rajesh. The nabbed bikers then revealed Ratan's whereabouts.

Rajesh said many such cases are registered in the city. "Some companies have various job requirements that lead people to commit such crimes," he said.

"They are not professional robbers, and committed the theft because they were desperate for the job. We have sent them to jail to control such crimes in the city."
