Mumbai: 6 people dead, 3 injured as taxi turns turtle on Eastern Freeway

Six persons of a single family were killed and three others injured when a taxi they were travelling in turned turtle on the Eastern Freeway towards south Mumbai on Saturday morning


Six persons of a single family were killed and three others injured when a taxi they were travelling in turned turtle on the Eastern Freeway towards south Mumbai here on Saturday morning.

The tragedy occurred at around 9 am when the taxi they were travelling in hit a road divider on the Eastern Freeway near Wadi Bunder, police said.

The vehicle carrying nine persons was headed to Mumbadevi temple in South Mumbai, they said. The victims, all residents of Surat, were going to offer prayers when the driver lost control and dashed the vehicle on the road divider, police said.

According to eye-witnesses account gathered by the police the vehicle suddenly lost control on the Freeway as it approached the Wadi Bunder area and rammed into a pole before overturning and crushing the occupants.

The three injured were rushed to Sir J. J. Hospital for treatment. The Dongri Police will record their statements later.

The onlookers soon alerted the police after which all the injured were rushed to J J Hospital.

The accident led to huge traffic jam on the EH's south-bound stretch.

The injured have been rushed to the JJ hospital and the relatives have been informed.

The Dongri police are investigating the case.
