NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule on Monday said the INDIA bloc's planned march to the Supreme Court would be a peaceful demonstration seeking justice, alleging that citizens' fundamental and constitutional rights were under threat.

Speaking at a press conference, Sule criticised the reported detention of journalists and questioned whether people's democratic rights were being curtailed. Her remarks came ahead of the Opposition's march against the functioning of the Election Commission.

Supriya Sule raises concerns over democratic rights

"We will peacefully try to seek justice because what is happening in the country is wrong... Yesterday, three journalists were also taken into custody. This is a democracy, and in a democratic setup, everyone has the fundamental right to speak, move freely, and exercise their constitutional rights; will you snatch that away as well?" she said.

The Opposition has accused the authorities of undermining democratic freedoms and demanded accountability over the Election Commission's functioning. The allegations have been disputed by the ruling side.

Rahul Gandhi calls for march to Delhi

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called on INDIA bloc members and supporters to participate in the march, using the slogan "Chalo Dilli".

In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, "March for Democracy. March for Justice. Chalo Dilli."

The march was scheduled to begin from Connaught Place and proceed towards the Supreme Court on Monday afternoon. The protest was set to go ahead despite Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declining to meet Opposition MPs over their concerns.

Opposition protests against Election Commission

The INDIA bloc's demonstration comes amid its demands for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and concerns over alleged electoral irregularities.

Gandhi has also accused Delhi Police and BJP workers of using violence against students and women during a protest led by the Campaign for Judicial Protection (CJP), which had called for the CEC's resignation.

The allegations form part of the Opposition's wider campaign against the Election Commission. The claims remain contested.

Security tightened across central Delhi

Security arrangements were strengthened across central Delhi ahead of the planned march. Barricades were placed at several locations, and police personnel were deployed near Barakhamba Road and Mandi House.

Personnel from the Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed as part of the security arrangements.
