In a bizarre twist to the monkey menace in Noida, a young man shot at and grievously injured his domestic help while trying to scare away some mischievous simians.

Twenty-five-year-old Akshay, resident of Sector 15, Noida, shot at the domestic help on the terrace of his home on Sunday afternoon.

The victim, Meena, 28,u00a0 was admitted to Kailash Hospital where doctors said that lead pellets had been fired at her chest from a close range. The pellets had pierced her chest and injured her right lung and other organs. "She is losing blood and is in a critical condition," a doctor said.

Noida police chief Ashok Tripathi said: "Akshay told us that he was on the terrace, cleaning his father's double barreled 0.12 bore gun as Meena was putting out clothes for drying. Suddenly, Meena asked him to scare away some monkeys. He said he tried to fire in the air but the gun barrel got entangled in the clothesline. At the same time, Meena, who had bent over to pick up some clothes, stood up and got hit."

The police said that Akshay, the son of a bottling company owner, would be booked under Section 338 of the Indian Penal Code for causing grievous injury by a rash and negligent act. This would fetch a maximum of two years in prison, if he is convicted.

However, till 8.30 pm on Sunday, no report had been filed at the Sector 20 police station. A police official said, "The case will be registered, whether we do it, or Meena's husband does it."
