Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to citizens to take all necessary precautions as several parts of the country continue to experience extremely high temperatures and severe heatwave conditions.

In a series of posts on X, PM Modi urged people to remain alert during the ongoing heatwave, stressing the importance of hydration, timely medical attention and care for vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and outdoor workers.

PM advises people to stay hydrated

The prime minister said the current heat conditions are affecting people across many regions of India and called on citizens to take preventive measures seriously.

"Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible," PM Modi said.

He advised people to stay hydrated, carry drinking water while stepping outdoors and help others cope with the heat whenever possible.

"Carry water whenever stepping out and also offer a glass of water to others. Such kindness goes a long way in this weather," he said.

Heat exhaustion warning issued

The prime minister also cautioned people against ignoring symptoms of heat-related illness, warning that heat exhaustion can quickly become life-threatening if not addressed in time.

He said symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness, headaches and extreme fatigue should be taken seriously.

"Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If someone around you feels unwell or develops a headache, help move them to a cool and shaded place immediately," PM Modi said.

He also encouraged citizens to assist people affected by the heat by ensuring access to water, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and medical care when required.

"In such weather, timely care and attention go a long way," he added.

Appeal to care for elderly family members

PM Modi urged citizens to regularly check on elderly parents, grandparents and relatives during the heatwave period.

He advised families to ensure senior citizens remain indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and get adequate rest.

"Call and check on elderly parents, grandparents and loved ones whenever possible during the heatwave," the prime minister said.

Health experts have repeatedly warned that elderly people are among the most vulnerable during prolonged periods of extreme heat, particularly in urban areas where temperatures remain high even during the night.

PM asks citizens to help birds and animals

The prime minister also appealed to people to show compassion towards birds and animals struggling in the scorching temperatures.

"In this extreme heat, let us also remember the birds and animals around us. A small bowl of water kept outside homes, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird," he said.

He urged people to extend simple acts of care during the ongoing heatwave.

Severe heatwave grips several states

Several regions across India are currently experiencing intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing dangerous levels in multiple states.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Banda in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature in the country on Tuesday at 47.4 degrees Celsius.

The IMD classifies a heatwave in plains when temperatures exceed 45 degrees Celsius, while temperatures above 47 degrees Celsius fall under the category of a severe heatwave.

Meteorologists have warned that the extreme heat conditions may continue in several northern and central parts of the country over the coming days, prompting authorities to issue advisories and precautionary measures for the public.
