Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended greetings to members of the Svetambara Jain community on the sacred occasion of Samvatsari, highlighting the importance of forgiveness, compassion, humility and goodwill in strengthening relationships.

Samvatsari is considered the final and most significant day of the Paryushan festival, which is primarily observed by the Svetambara sect of Jainism. The occasion is dedicated to introspection, repentance and seeking forgiveness for mistakes made during the previous year.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, "Samvatsari reminds us that forgiveness and compassion strengthen every bond. On this sacred occasion, may humility guide us and may kindness and goodwill shape our every action. Michhami Dukkadam!"

Day of introspection and forgiveness

Samvatsari has deep spiritual significance in Jainism. On the occasion, devotees undertake an annual period of penitence and reflect closely on their conduct and actions over the preceding year.

Followers seek forgiveness for broken vows and repent for wrongdoings committed knowingly or unknowingly. The practice is rooted in the Jain belief that forgiveness can help individuals overcome negative emotions and move towards spiritual purification.

The day also reflects key Jain principles, including ahimsa, or non-violence, universal friendship and compassion. Devotees are encouraged to release feelings of anger, ego, resentment and animosity while reflecting on their conduct and seeking personal improvement.

‘Michhami Dukkadam' marks the observance

Samvatsari falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami according to the Jain calendar. The day is observed through prayers, introspection and the traditional exchange of the words ‘Michhami Dukkadam', which convey a request for forgiveness.

The occasion marks the conclusion of the Paryushan festival for the Svetambara community.

The Digambara Jain community observes a corresponding day of forgiveness called Kshamavani. It comes at the end of the ten-day Das Lakshan Parva and similarly centres on repentance, forgiveness, compassion and goodwill towards all living beings.

Through Samvatsari, devotees reflect on their actions and seek to strengthen their commitment to peaceful and compassionate living.
