‘Cloudburst-like’ rain paralyses Pune, exposes infrastructure gaps

Pune was thrown into chaos after an intense, erratic downpour of 104 mm in just one hour triggered flood-like conditions across the city, exposing critical gaps in urban infrastructure. Officials termed the event "cloudburst-like" in at least two locations, underscoring increasingly volatile rainfall patterns. The sudden surge led to widespread waterlogging, disruption of daily life, and damage to homes, with rainwater entering several residential areas. An elderly woman lost her life after a tree collapsed.

Emergency response

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) convened an urgent high-level meeting on Friday, April 3. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure flagged the growing unpredictability of short-duration, high-intensity rainfall overwhelming ageing systems.

Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram said, "stormwater drain cleaning has been prioritised. A fresh survey of illegal constructions along rivers and drainage channels will be carried out, followed by the strict removal of encroachments blocking natural water flow".

The administration has also acknowledged that rapid urbanisation and concretisation have reduced groundwater absorption, worsening surface runoff. While such extreme rainfall is being seen globally, officials said the focus will be on faster drainage rather than eliminating waterlogging entirely.
