PM extends Raksha Bandhan greetings

Earlier in the day, PM Modi greeted people across the country on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan 2026 and expressed hope that the bond of love, affection, and mutual trust would remain unbreakable.

In a post on X, PM Modi wished people happiness, prosperity and success and described the festival as a celebration of the enduring bond shared between loved ones.

Festival celebrates sibling bond

Raksha Bandhan is traditionally associated with the bond of love, affection and protection between brothers and sisters.

On the occasion, sisters generally tie colourful rakhis around their brothers' wrists and pray for their health, happiness and prosperity. Brothers reciprocate by expressing affection, giving gifts and promising to support their sisters through life's challenges.

The festival is observed on Purnima, or the full moon day, of the Hindu month of Shravana. This year, Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated on Friday.

Traditional rituals mark celebrations

As part of the traditional ceremony, sisters apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads before tying the rakhi. Families also exchange sweets and gifts as they celebrate the occasion together.

Raksha Bandhan is primarily celebrated in India and Nepal and is observed during the Hindu lunar month of Shravana, which generally falls in August according to the Gregorian calendar.
