Athawale had to leave without addressing the students as protestors demanded that he should first withdraw support to the BJP-led NDA government.

Police had to intervene and escort him as students entered into a heated argument with him over his support to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Students from Maharashtra told him to first resign. They asked him how could he remain silent over suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula. "How can you continue with the BJP which is responsible for this incident," a student asked.

Athawale said the RPI has already demanded a CBI probe into the suicide. He also demanded action against central minister Bandaru Dattatreya.
