Rare coins displayed in city

The International Collector's Society of Rare Items (ICSRI) displayed two gold coins of Shivaji's era at an auction cum exhibition, which was held in the city recently.

Describing Gold Hon and copper Shivarai, ICSRI president Shrinivas Bhat said that these coins were released on the occasion of Shivaji Maharaj's coronation ceremony, which was held in the year 1674 at Raigad fort. "Seven lakh Gold Hon made at a south Indian mint were issued for circulation after the coronation," he informed.

He added that the two coins have Raja Shiv written with dotted outlines on one side and Chhatrapati on the other side. The round shaped gold coins weigh 2.7 to 2.9 grams and are of a diameter of 1.2 to 1.3 cms.

Also, more than 75 frames displaying 12 different categories ranging from ancient to modern coinage and currency notes collected by various collectors from all over India were put on display.
