Restaurants step up security measures

Pune's restaurateurs are putting their own security measures like CCTV cameras and metal detectors in place following the German Bakery blast. Members of Pune Hoteliers and Restaurants Association (PHRA) say such measures have become necessary.

"We have started negotiating with companies that manufacture such products. This will prove to be an expensive investment as metal detectors are sold for about Rs 1 lakh and CCTV cameras for almost Rs 70,000," said Ganesh Shetty, the newly-appointed president of the PHRA, who said the measures could not wait.

"Ultimately, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of our customers and business," Shetty said.

Imrun Sethi, owner, Tertullia Lounge bar and restaurant, Koregaon Park said, "I have deployed security personnel who check bags and purses. We are, in fact, requesting guests to either keep all bags outside or in their cars. We have also installed four CCTV cameras on the property. We just can't take any chances."

Sachin Joshi, proprietor, Metro Mix, Kothrud, said he is yet to decide on a concrete measure but has briefed his employees to be careful about suspicious bags and people.u00a0

Commissioner of Police, Satyapal Singh, however maintained that all necessary rules and regulations have already been laid down and conveyed to all restaurants. "There is nothing new that can be added," said Singh.
