A district court on Friday remanded former Trinamool Congress legislator Nirmal Ghosh in 14 days of judicial custody in connection with his alleged involvement in the larger conspiracy surrounding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.
Ghosh is accused of being one of three principal masterminds behind the hurried cremation of the victim's body at a crematorium in Panihati.
The prosecution alleges that cremation-related protocols were breached to eliminate the possibility of a second post-mortem, reported IANS.
On Friday, Ghosh, who was arrested in neighbouring Odisha on Thursday, was produced before the district court at Barrackpore. His counsel moved a bail plea on medical grounds.
His counsel argued that Ghosh, 78, suffers from age-related ailments and requires sustained medical treatment, and therefore should be granted bail. However, the public prosecutor opposed the plea, citing the seriousness of the charges in the RG Kar rape and murder case.
The district court judge rejected the bail plea and remanded Ghosh in 14 days of judicial custody.
On August 8, while addressing a programme in Panihati, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a fresh probe by the Barrackpore Police Commissariat into the "conspired" and 'hurried' cremation of the victim's body, reported IANS.
Following the announcement, the victim's father filed a fresh police complaint at Khardah Police Station. Based on the complaint, police registered a fresh FIR naming Ghosh, local Trinamool councillor from Panihati Municipality Somnath Dey, and Sanjeev Banerjee, a neighbour of the victim's family.
Ghosh had been absconding since the fresh FIR was registered and was finally arrested on Thursday night in neighbouring Odisha.
Meanwhile, police also arrested Banerjee, while Dey remains absconding.
Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, who was arrested in Odisha a day ago over his alleged involvement in the "hurried cremation" of the rape-murder victim from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was assaulted by a mob outside a police station in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Friday.
Ghosh was greeted with blows and kicks from the crowd as security personnel escorted him to a prison van outside Khardah Police Station to take him to the Barrackpore sub-divisional court for production.
A visibly distraught Ghosh was also pelted with footwear, eggs and even muck by the mob, despite a tight cordon of police and RAF personnel. Security personnel covered his head with a helmet to minimise the impact of the attack.
At the Barrackpore court, the TMC leader was also greeted with "chor, chor" slogans by another group of people waiting for him, even as police rushed him to the court lock-up.
