CCTV footage nails four South Americans who stole jewellery from Bangalore hotel room on March 22

A gang of four Latin Americans, including a girl, who stole 8 kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore from a hotel room in Bangalore were arrested in Goayesterday.

The booty that was stuffed into dolls and wrapped in carbon paper to dodge security scanners.

The dolls were to be couriered to Columbia but before that could happen, a Bangalore police team nabbed the gang at Colva beach, and recovered the booty.

The accused have been identified as Pedro Alejandro Maita Rodriguez (30) of Venezuela, Maira Alejandra Aranago Giraldo (22), a Colombian national, Elenilson Amilcar Pocasangre Ruano (34) of San Salvador and Luis Alberto Giraldo Lopez (25) ofu00a0 Colombia.

Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Alok Kumar said the accused entered India via Nepal. "They visited jewellery exhibitions in Kolkota, Mumbai and Banglaore," Kumar added.

They zeroed in on an exhibition held at Kantirava Indoor stadium and made plans to steal jewellery from Captain Vijay Saini, manager of the gold manufacturing company based in Jaipur.

The gang followed Saini to his room in Hotel Pride on Residency Road, and broke into the hotel room when Saini was out for dinner and stole the gold.
How CCTV Footage Did The Gang In

A team led by Joint Commissioner Alok Kumar obtained the video footage from CCTV cameras installed at Hotel Pride.

The team studied CCTV footage of people moving in and out of the hotel. They also studied CCTV footage from the exhibition.

The breakthrough was achieved when they saw that the accused who are seen in the hotel footage had also visited Saini's stall at the exhibition.

This has led the police to zero in on the accused. They responded fast by issuing a Look out circular (LOC) to the police in and around the state.

The police learnt that the accused were last seen in Goa.

A team rushed to the beach state, which attracts lakhs of foreign tourists every year, and arrested the gang.

The accused were interrogated thoroughly before they confessed to the crime.

The police have also recovered three mobile SIMS from the accused.

"We are checking if they were involved in other crimes," a police officer involved in the case said.
