The 28-year-old woman doctor who allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra's Satara district had called one of the accused, a software engineer, shortly before taking the extreme step, and the two had also exchanged text messages, news agency PTI reported, quoting police, on Friday.
The doctor, posted at a government hospital in Phaltan Tehsil, was found dead inside a hotel room in the town on Thursday night. She hailed from Beed district.
According to police, the doctor had called the Pune-based software engineer and exchanged chat messages with him before taking the extreme step, PTI reported. The woman had been living as a tenant in a flat owned by the engineer's father, a senior police officer said.
In a suicide note written on her palm, the doctor alleged that Police Sub-inspector Gopal Badane raped her on multiple occasions, while the engineer mentally harassed her over the past five months.
Following the revelations, Badane was suspended from service, officers said. A case of rape and abetment to suicide has been registered against both Badane and the engineer, though no arrests have been made so far, reported PTI.
Earlier, a relative of the doctor claimed she often faced pressure from police to alter medical reports in cases of unnatural deaths, as well as modify reports when arrested persons were brought to the hospital for medical examinations.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has spoken to Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi and directed strict action in the matter, including the suspension of the sub-inspector named in the suicide note.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details will be shared after forensic and digital analyses are complete.
"The doctor's body has been sent for post-mortem. We are also investigating the allegations mentioned in the suicide note on the victim's palm," he said.
A relative of the doctor claimed that she was under pressure to alter a post-mortem report and also to modify medical test reports of arrested accused in certain cases.
Speaking on the case, Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe said, "This is a serious issue. I have written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking stringent action against those involved."
