BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday removed all references to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from his profile on X, triggering speculation about his future in the party. However, neither Poonawalla nor the BJP has officially confirmed any resignation or change in his role.
Poonawalla's updated bio now reads: "Religion, Islam, Culture, Hindu, ideology-Bhartiya, Author: GST ki Yatra; Lifelong follower of PM Narendra Modi." Notably, the revised profile no longer mentions his designation as BJP national spokesperson or his association with the party. He also shared a screenshot of the updated bio on his X account, drawing widespread attention and prompting discussions over the significance of the move.
The development comes days after Poonawalla hinted that he was considering stepping away from active politics. During multiple media interviews, he said he felt the time had come to "move on" from active political life. Although he stopped short of announcing his resignation from the BJP, his remarks fuelled speculation about his future in public life.
On Friday, Poonawalla reshared videos of those interviews on X, once again highlighting his comments about moving on from politics. The reposts, combined with the changes to his social media profile, further intensified speculation that he may be preparing to leave the party or step away from his responsibilities.
Despite repeated attempts, Poonawalla could not be reached for comment. The BJP has also not issued any official statement clarifying whether he continues to serve as the party's national spokesperson or whether any decision regarding his position has been taken.
Poonawalla has been one of the BJP's prominent national spokespersons, regularly representing the party in television debates and media discussions on a wide range of political, social and national issues. He is also active on social media, where he frequently comments on government policies, political developments and current affairs. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the party's most recognisable faces in television debates.
As of now, there is no official indication that Poonawalla has resigned from the BJP or relinquished his post. The changes to his X profile and his recent public remarks have, however, sparked widespread speculation about his political future. Until an official clarification is issued by either Poonawalla or the BJP, the reasons behind the updated bio and what it means for his role within the party remain uncertain.
