Soaps, shampoos and cosmetics must now display veg or non-veg symbols under new rules

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, making it mandatory for soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cosmetics and toiletries to display symbols indicating whether the product is of vegetarian or non-vegetarian origin.

Manufacturers must now place a clear vegetarian or non-vegetarian symbol on everyday products like soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, and cosmetics. Products made entirely from plant-based or vegetarian ingredients will display a green dot, while those containing animal-derived ingredients will feature a red or brown dot.
