A delegation of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MPs, led by the party's working president Supriya Sule, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and discussed various issues concerning Maharashtra.
All eight Lok Sabha MPs of the NCP (SP) were present during the meeting with the prime minister. The delegation raised issues related to Maharashtra and matters concerning their respective constituencies.
Speaking to PTI after the meeting, Sule said the delegation had discussed issues concerning Maharashtra with the prime minister.
According to sources, the NCP (SP) MPs raised several issues affecting their constituencies during the meeting. These included drought, onion prices and pollution in the Chandrabhaga river, among other matters.
The meeting between the NCP (SP) MPs and Modi lasted for around 15 minutes.
The contentious Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendments Bill did not figure in the discussion, sources said.
Supriya Sule has been opposing the FCRA Bill in its present form. On Saturday, she had said that foreign funding should not always be viewed with suspicion and urged the Centre to either withdraw the proposed legislation or refer it to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The NCP (SP) is currently part of the Opposition INDIA bloc. Despite Sule's opposition to the FCRA Bill, the legislation was not raised during Monday's meeting with the prime minister, according to sources.
The meeting comes weeks after Sule and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar met Modi on July 22. During that meeting, they had discussed several issues, including the demands of students over the NEET paper leaks, problems faced by farmers, water management and issues concerning the education sector.
Following the July 22 meeting, Pawar had said that the prime minister had given assurances of positive and concrete measures on the issues discussed.
The latest meeting between the NCP (SP) MPs and Modi focused on issues related to Maharashtra and matters concerning their constituencies.
The delegation included all eight NCP (SP) Lok Sabha MPs, with Sule leading the discussions with the prime minister.
The meeting took place amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, during which the Opposition has been raising various issues with the government.
However, according to sources, Monday's discussion between the NCP (SP) MPs and Modi remained focused on Maharashtra-related concerns, including drought, onion prices and pollution in the Chandrabhaga river.
The FCRA Amendments Bill, which Sule has criticised in its present form, was not part of the discussion during the meeting.
The NCP (SP) delegation's meeting with the prime minister follows the earlier interaction between Pawar, Sule and Modi on July 22, when issues affecting students, farmers, water management and education were discussed.
