Three people suspected of being involved in the brutal sexual assault on a college student, which happened near the airport in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore, were shot at and nabbed by the police on Tuesday.
As reported by news agency PTI, all three who were responsible for the heinous crime near the Coimbatore International Airport on Sunday were found to have been involved in criminal cases in the past, the police said on Tuesday.
After thoroughly checking CCTV footage, the Peelamedu police narrowed down on the trio hiding at an isolated place in Vellikinaru. Finding themselves surrounded. The police personnel further charged three accused, after which the suspects attacked the police team in a bid to escape. While looking for an escape, they inflicted injuries on a police constable.
The officials, while asserting about the situation, said, "The police opened fire and shot at all three suspects. While one of them sustained a gunshot in one leg, the other two were injured in both legs when the police opened fire. All of them have been admitted to a government Medicare facility here, along with the injured constable and are undergoing treatment," as cited by news agency PTI.
The official further added that, "The suspects have been identified as Guna, Satish and Karthik. They have been arrested, and further investigation is on," reported PTI.
The sexual assault sent shock waves across the state and sparked political outrage, with various parties demanding stringent action against the culprits.
Earlier on Monday morning, the unidentified miscreants attacked and chased away the male friend of the 19-year-old student and allegedly sexually assaulted her on the night of November 2 at a secluded spot.
Despite being injured, her friend managed to inform the police. Late in the night, the police managed to locate the victim with the help of the locals and had her admitted to a hospital.
While both the student and her friend were admitted to the hospital, the condition of both victims is now stable.
Expressing shock over the incident, BJP leader K. Annamalai on Monday claimed that since the DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu, incidents such as these have shown that anti-social elements no longer fear the law or the police.
The BJP leader, while posting on the social media platform X, stated that "From DMK ministers to police officials, there has been a disturbing pattern of shielding sexual offenders instead of ensuring justice. The DMK government has utterly failed in both preventing sexual crimes and providing safety for women."
