Unidentified thieves wearing nighties and masks allegedly arrived in an ambulance and looted a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM in Telangana's Kamareddy district in the early hours of Sunday, police said on Monday.
Telangana ATM robbery took place between 1 am and 1.30 am at an ATM in Gandhari village. According to police, the burglars used gas cutters to break open the machine and escaped with the cash. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras, IANS reported.
The CCTV footage shows the suspects arriving at the spot in an ambulance, wearing masks, caps and gloves. They allegedly used gas cutters to damage the ATM, removed the cash and fled.
The suspects appear to be men in the footage. However, police have not ruled out the involvement of women, citing a recent ATM theft in Karimnagar district in which a woman was allegedly involved.
Telangana ATM robbery came to light on Monday morning when locals noticed the damaged ATM and alerted the police. A police team reached the spot, registered a case and collected evidence with the assistance of a clues team, IANS reported.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage to identify the suspects and trace their movements before and after the robbery. The exact amount stolen has not yet been confirmed, as police are verifying the ATM's cash balance to establish the loss.
Police are also investigating whether the ambulance used in the robbery was genuine or was deployed as a disguise to avoid suspicion and conceal the suspects' movements.
The incident comes weeks after burglars allegedly damaged two SBI ATMs and stole cash in Telangana's Karimnagar district on September 19.
The two robberies took place at Durshed, under the Karimnagar Rural Police Station limits, and Thimmapur, under the LMD Police Station limits. In both cases, the offenders allegedly used gas cutters to break open the ATMs. The incidents were also captured on CCTV cameras, the news agency reported.
At Durshed, the accused allegedly sprayed a liquid on the CCTV cameras before breaking into the ATM. Police identified the alleged involvement of a woman based on the footage.
According to the police investigation, two suspects, including a woman, arrived at the Durshed ATM in a car. They were allegedly wearing caps, spectacles, gloves and masks.
After damaging the machine, the accused fled with Rs 8 lakh in cash, police said.
