Thane police commissioner starts initiative where women constables will advise citizens on how to file NCs and FIRs

Two women constables trained in soft skills, counselling and handling people will man the 24-hour welcome desk

In the hope of overhauling its image of being ‘unapproachable', the police have started operating an information desk of sorts at police stations. The initiative, started at all 34 police stations in Thane city, is the brainchild of the commissioner of police, Thane, Param Bir Singh and Ashutosh Dhumbre the joint commissioner of police.

"Two women constables trained in soft skills, counselling and handling people will sit at the 24-hour welcome desk at the entrance to police stations and help citizens on how to file NCs and FIRs," said Ashutosh Dhumbre, joint commissioner of police, Thane. The two constables will interact with the complainant and guide him or her on how to register a First Information Report.

"People feel that registering a complaint is a long-drawn process and that they need to take leave from work. To bust this myth and make the process simpler, the welcome desk will explain everything to the complainant in detail," Dhumbre said.

"Of all government departments, the police have the maximum interaction with citizens and that's why we came up with this idea," said a police officer from Mahatma Phule police station in Kalyan.
