Nine inmates of the high-security Tihar Jail were injured yesterday after two groups of prisoners clashed, using blades and iron strips, over allocations of cells, officials said.
Manish, Mukin, Rasheed and their associates attacked Sachin, Bhupinder and Irfaz with iron strips and blades when the three were being transferred to special ward number seven of jail number one around 6 am, highly placed jail sources said.
Before the shifting, they all were lodged in ward number two. "The group was retaliating to an attack on them on Saturday. The quarrel began over sharing a corner space in a particular room, which later turned into fisticuffs," said a source. The trio then hit back at the attackers leading to the rampage, the sources said.
The corner space is the most sought after inu00a0 the jail as it allows some semblance of privacy within the shared common space. The injured inmates, also including Mohammad Mahfooz, Nazim and Moinuddin, were rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
Jail spokesman Sunil Gupta said it was a minor incident and all been discharged from hospital after treatment. "An inquiry has been ordered."
