Tribute to Music

On behalf of World Music Day, Shoonya u2013 a fusion band along with many other artistes will be performing at the Christ college auditorium on Sunday, June 21. 10 artists will join together for a 90 minute musical celebration as part of the World Music Day event in the city. The musicians are working under the co-ordination of Djembe artist Ashok Kumar for this event.

The Fete de la Musique or World Music day was originally the celebration of music on June 21, the day of the summer solstice. The idea was first broached in 1976 by American musician Joel Cohen, and then employed by the national French radio station France Musique. Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration at the moment of the summer solstice. The idea was taken up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1981 and first took place in 1982. Now it is a world wide event that allows for the performance and listening of all types of genres of music.
