Two men allegedly participating in the Kanwar Yatra sustained serious injuries after they were hit by a car and later assaulted during an altercation in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior district, police said on Friday.
The incident triggered protests by local residents and Hindu organisations, who blocked a road demanding immediate action against those responsible.
The incident took place late on Thursday night in the Kila Gate area under the Kila Gate police station limits.
Following the attack, senior police and district officials rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control as tensions escalated in the locality.
According to police, the two men were first struck by a car before an altercation broke out, during which they were allegedly assaulted.
Both sustained injuries, with one of them reported to be in serious condition and currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sujawal Jagga said a case has been registered against unidentified persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police have launched a search operation to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
He added that although protesters briefly blocked the road after the incident, the situation was later brought under control following discussions with local authorities. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the clash.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradeep Sharma also visited the scene to review the situation and oversee administrative measures.
He said the incident originated after a road accident involving a car in the Kila Gate area. Those allegedly involved in the assault have been booked under the relevant legal provisions, and further investigation is underway.
Police are collecting evidence, recording witness statements and examining the sequence of events to establish the exact circumstances behind the assault.
A relative of the injured men, Manoj Yadav, claimed the victims were participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra and were on their way to Haridwar in Uttarakhand to collect holy water from the Ganga.
According to him, the duo had stopped near Kila Gate while waiting for other members of their group when a speeding car allegedly hit them.
He alleged that after the collision, the occupants of the vehicle got out and began assaulting the two men.
Yadav further claimed that the driver later called several associates, who allegedly arrived armed with sharp weapons and hammers before attacking the victims again.
The accused allegedly fled the spot after the assault.
Police have not yet confirmed these allegations and said the claims are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials have appealed for calm and assured that appropriate legal action will be taken once all facts are established.
