Rock
The Lightyears Explode
This three-piece punk act from Mumbai is manic in its energy and agenda. The band's three-minute pop punk bursts channel The Arctic Monkeys through a Blink-182 filter to create some of the freshest sounds I've heard from a new band in the city in years.
Adam & The Fish Eyed Poets
The name is deceiving. Adam AND The Fish Eyed Poets is just one guy from Chennai. Yet, Kishore Krishna's music has a wholesomeness to it that's telling of a much larger act, both in size and stature. Make sure he's on your radar.
Electronica
Dualist Inquiry
Sahej Bakshi, better known by the moniker Dualist Inquiry, is one of the most innovative new electronica artists in the quickly saturating Indian EDM scene. Catch him play the Blue Frog on June 9.
Metal Skyharbor
The project of New Delhi multi-instrumentalist Keshav Dhar, Skyharbor creates atmospheric metal soundscapes that take from varied influences. While the project is currently in-studio only, I can't wait to see what it sounds like live.
Goddess Gagged
One of the freshest metal acts to come out of Mumbai, Goddess Gagged play an almost Scribe-esque brand of post-hardcore inspired by acts like Alexisonfire and Architects. Make sure you catch 'em live.
Jazz
Vijay Iyer
New York-born Vijay Iyer has received much acclaim for being one of the most experimental jazz composers in recent time. His album Historicity was nominated for a Grammy award in 2010. I highly recommend you get your hands on it.
