A lot, feels Delhi University Students' Union
Young leaders at Delhi University are learning their lessons in 'Rajneeti' very keenly. They have at least comprehended that name of an institution can be exploited for maximum political gains.
The Delhi University Students' Union has urged the vice-chancellor to add the honorific before the names of historic personalities after whom some of the colleges have been named.
Vivekanand College should be named Swami Vivekanand College, Zakir Hussain be made Dr Zakir Hussain, Shyama Prasad Mukherji should be made Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherji, the DUSU has demanded in a letter to the vice-chancellor.
"The names of a few colleges in Delhi University need to be corrected. These colleges named after great personalities who have made substantial contribution to society are required to be given their due respect," the DUSU has demanded in the letter sent on October 23.
"It is highly irreverent on part of the varsity to neglect the issue. It has been a long pending demand with the university, but no heed has been paid to the matter," said Jitender Choudhry, DUSU president.u00a0
His political rivals in the NSUI could not disagree. "We have no objection to the demand; it is good if the names are sound more respectable," said Shahnawaz Choudhry, general secretary, NSUI.
However, vice-chancellor Deepak Pental is not amused. "I really don't think changing the names or adding a title matters at all. Respect has to come from the heart; one should read about these great personalities and learn from them, that is what matters. I have sent the request to the Dean of Colleges to decide over the matter," he told MiD DAY.
"There are many larger issues to be considered. The DUSU should concentrate on things relevant to students' welfare. I am not interested in the matter at all," Pental added. Also, the colleges mentioned in the list have not been consulted as yet.
"This is a ridiculous idea, whosoever has proposed must be insane. I don't know what fun they derive in making such futile demands," said an annoyed S K Garg, principal of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College. DUSU has demanded to add 'Pandit' to the name of the institution."I don't see any point in this matter. It is a fruitless idea," said Dr S K Jolly, principal, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College.

| Congress-backed NSUI is agitated over what it calls attempts by ABVP office bearers of DelhiUniversity Students' Union to "saffronise" the office of the body by naming it after RSS founder KB Hedgewar. NSUI alleged that the DUSU office building had been painted saffron, and the ABVP representatives who dominate the union were trying to name the office after the RSS ideologue. |
