The GUIDE chatted up with Shubha Mudgal about her upcoming show Koshish, which will include a heady melange of Indian classical music, western art music, Jazz and Sufi poetry
Taking fusion to a whole new level, that's what celebrated husband-wife duo of Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan are attempting to do. Koshish will see Shubha Mudgal and her husband's musical troupe performing a cultural treat, which will include a soul-stirring fusion of Indian classical, North Indian music, Western art music, Jazz and Sufi poetry. A heady combo indeed!

Shubha Mudgal
Mudgal states that the name has been especially chosen because it is an attempt to create a harmonious musical dialogue between musicians who are from different genres. "We create compositions which reflect diversity," she states. The group includes a motley combo of Pratap Rath (percussionist and veteran of film music), Benoni Soans (jazz drummer), Joquim Dias (bass guitarist), Sudhir Nayak (harmonium), Murad Ali (sarangi player) and Cuthbert D'Silva (bassist).
What differentiates Koshish from other shows is the use of poetry as the common meeting ground, unlike other fusion performances. Koshish will have different types of poems, spanning from blank to free verse, as well as the combination of Indian classical music with Jazz and film music, elaborated Mudgal.
All the musicians involved are from different cities, cultures and genres of music, involving a lot of co-ordination.
"I will be performing unrecorded, unpublished compositions along with popular, commercial compositions like Ab ke Sawan," adds Mudgal.
