Global politics rarely collides with Bollywood-style glamour but this time, it absolutely did!
Giorgia Meloni posted a smiling selfie on X, with a strong political message that appeared to take aim at Russian journalist Vladimir Solovyov. She probably knew what she was doing.
While the world focused on the political heat in her caption, Indian on the other hand had other plans, we collectively zoomed in on something very different- 'the jhumkas'. Some even joked that they looked like a desi gift from "Modi ji" himself.
Dressed in formal attire, Meloni looked composed and confident, but it was her large, intricate chandbali-style jhumkas that stole the spotlight. With delicate âlatkan' details and ghungroo-like elements, the jewellery gave full-on Indian festive, wedding-season vibes. In simple internet terms: the look ate and left no crumbs.
Within minutes, Indian social media lit up. The political message took a backseat and the earrings became the main character. In a moment that perfectly captures the internet age, a serious geopolitical post quietly transformed into a full-blown fashion conversation. Because sometimes, even in the middle of global tensions, all it takes is a pair of jhumkas to steal the spotlight.
The now-viral image quickly became a talking point across platforms. What began as a politically charged post ended up becoming a cross-cultural fashion moment. For Indian audiences especially, it felt like watching a world leader casually step into a wedding function mood without even trying.
Users simply couldn't get over it:
"What jhumka!" while another said "You slay!", another calling her "Bohot sundar!" and some asking her about those earings.
But behind the sparkle was a serious message. Meloni's post came amid a heated exchange with Russian journalist Vladimir Solovyov, who had earlier launched a harsh personal attack on her, using words like "disgrace" and "fascist creature."
Without naming him directly, Meloni hit back, writing, "A diligent regime propagandist cannot give lessons in either consistency or freedom." She added that such criticism would not change her government's direction.
Her message was widely interpreted as a defence of Italy's political autonomy and her government's refusal to be influenced by external pressure.
This comes at a time when Italy's foreign policy choices especially its refusal to join certain military alignments in sensitive regions and denying Sigonella air base have drawn criticism from multiple global leaders, including Donald Trump, who publicly expressed disappointment over her stance.
Doubling down, Meloni made her position clear: "We⦠have no strings, no masters and take no orders. Our compass remains⦠the interest of Italy." This statement was followed by immense mocking by the Italians in the comment section.
Back in Italy, reactions were divided. Some critics accused her of failing to deliver on election promises ranging from tax cuts to economic reforms while continuing to send billions in aid to Ukraine.
Others, however, supported her strong and independent stance on foreign policy.
