At the Bhoomiheen 'jhuggi-jhopri' camp in South Delhi's Govindpuri, bulldozers began demolishing illegal houses early on Wednesday morning. Families desperately tried to gather their few belongings in the dark. By the time the sun rose, hundreds of people were left without homes amid the intense heatwave. (Pics/PTI)

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) reported that nearly 344 shanty structures, mostly unoccupied, were demolished, as the land they owned had been illegally taken over. They also confirmed that no court had put a stop to the demolition process
The demolition occurs at a time when Delhi is facing a severe heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert as temperatures in parts of the city have reached 45.5 degrees Celsius
According to a notice issued to the residents on June 9, they were given three days to vacate their homes. However, the notices stated that all the residents of Bhoomiheen Camp, Kalkaji Extension, had been informed that illegal clusters would be demolished, as per court instructions
During the demolition process, the area was secured by police and paramilitary forces. According to officials, sufficient personnel had been deployed to ensure the operation proceeded peacefully
The Bhoomiheen Camp has faced multiple demolition drives previously in May and July of 2023
