Following a series of child thefts, mothers have been requested to care for their children in BMC-run hospitals, just the way they care for their mobile phones and purses.

Dr Ravi Rananavare, Dean of the civic-run Nair Hospital, told MiD DAY that they have stuck posters inside hospitals asking if mothers can take care of their cellphones and ornaments, how is it that they lose their child.

"We have put up posters in almost all health units across the city," said Rananavare.

The reminders come at a time when there is no breakthrough in the stolen child case at a civic-run hospital in Shivaji Nagar in Govandi on Monday.

The BMC is stuck as it does not have an independent investigative agency. The police say they are still at a loss.

"On Thursday, our team visited some pilgrims in the city like Mahim Dargah and Haji Ali. We are covering all possible angles but there has been no breakthrough in the case yet," said DS Jodgudri, senior inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station.

The Shivaji Nagar police have also put up posters in the area, requesting residents to inform police if they saw any suspicious woman or child.

The sequence of events is all too similar to the child theft at V N Desai and Shivaji Nagar hospitals earlier at Santacruz where newborns were stolen in the recent past.

According to Shivaji Nagar police, it is difficult for them to find the culprit because there is no clear description.

Two-month-old Shahid Ansari was abducted from the arms of his eight-year-old brother Tahir.u00a0 Tahir told police that the kidnapper was about 5'3" and in early 30s.

Shivaji Nagar police is also facing increasing problems tracking the kidnapper wearing a burqa as it is a Muslim dominated area and it is difficult to zero in on a suspect.

Other cases
In a similar case on October 15, two boys had been stolen by burqa-clad women, one from the BMC's VN Desai hospital in Santa Cruz and the other from CST.
