Shaikh did not show the arrests or make an entry in the police diary but continued to detain the duo until
Tuesday night.

According to the police, Shaikh, who is due to retire next year, was the night duty officer at Malwani police
station on Monday when S Sawant, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Madh area, called and said her housekeeper had robbed some ornaments from her house.

Sawant detained Shinde and her daughter for stealing a mangal sutra and a gold chain collectively valued at Rs 3 lakh.

"Shaikh detained Shinde and her daughter on Monday without showing the arrests or making an entry in the diary.

If he was not confident that the duo was behind the theft, he should have conducted inquiries and let them go," said Vashisth Andhale, senior inspector, Malvani police station.

Suicide attempt

"Shaikh should have also kept watch on Shinde after bringing her to the police station.

Shinde went to the bathroom on Tuesday evening and attempted suicide by hanging herself with a nylon rope in the bathroom.

Fortunately, a woman constable saw her hanging and rushed her to the hospital in the nick of time," he added. Shinde was taken to Raksha hospital in Charkop, where she is recuperating.

Shaikh has been booked under Sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 343 (wrongful confinement for three or more days) and 348 (wrongful confinement to extort confession or compel restoration of property) of the IPC.
