Holding your mobile phone tightly in a crowded train is just not enough.

Mobile thieves are passe; viruses are a far bigger threat to users, especially with high-end, internet-enabled mobile phones. The vulnerability quotient of such phones to a virus attack has increased manifold.

The biggest threat in the Indian market are the cheaper Chinese-manufactured phones that do not have the unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

Despite being banned, the phones continue to flood the markets, and can be found at every street corner at throwaway prices.

National security threat

Without an IMEI number, neither can the cellphone owner be traced nor can the phone calls be retrieved. The IMEI number becomes relevant especially when a phone is stolen or lost, as the police depends on the IMEI number to trace its location.

"A mobile phone without an IMEI number poses a national security threat and hampers investigations," said Brijesh Singh, senior IPS officer. "It takes away the identity of a person," he added.

With the integration of mobile phone and computer, the nature of virus attacks that a mobile phone is susceptible too is similar.

"Viruses are flushed in for data theft, contact number theft and phishing syndicate. A mobile phone user who accesses the internet should be wary of such attacks," said Vijay Mukhi, technology expert.

Another threat that a user needs to safeguard from is falling prey to cyber syndicate that flushes in a virus after which your mobile phone can be used to make international calls without your knowledge.

The IMEI is a 15-digit number that includes information on the origin, model, and serial number of the device. It can be displayed on most phones by dialing '#06#. It is also usually printed on the compliance plate under the battery.

Tech Expert:u00a0 Download a game, not a Trojan
Unknown to the mobile phone owner, if the phone has been infected by a Trojan, a cyber crook may use the phone to make international calls across the globe. Though the user has no knowledge of these premium calls, the cost of the calls will be billed to the mobile phone user.

The best way to keep away from such attacks is to avoid downloading software or other files from unknown websites.u00a0 Also, the best way to stay away from international call frauds is by never revealing your personal details to an unknown caller. They may use your info to create an alternative identity.
