The Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai crime branch is investigating if Inter-Services Intelligence's (ISI) suspected agent, Salim Mozawalla alias Javed Abdul Gafoor Mozawalla (28), is involved in the 26/11 terrorist attacks on Mumbai.

If he is found to have a link to the attacks, the case is likely to turn on its head, since until now, the crime branch and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) have claimed that no local person was involved in the attacks.

Mozawalla was arrested under suspicion of passing important information to the Karachi consulate in Delhi and also to ISI officials in Pakistan.

According to crime branch sources, he is now being questioned about his whereabouts during the 26/11 terrorist attacks.

When contacted, Deven Bharti, additional commissioner (crime), said, "I am out of Mumbai. I cannot comment on the issue."

Meanwhile, his family has moved to his brother Asif's home to escape the humiliation, said a neighbour, on condition of anonymity. According to a watchman at Infinity Towers, Byculla East, their original residence, "Mozawalla's family moved because they were distressed after his arrest."

When SUNDAY MiD DAY visited the house, there was no response and the door to the residence was locked.
According to another resident, "Mozawalla lived here with his wife, mother and two children."

A neighbour told SMD that Mozawalla would say he was working at Hajj House. When we inquired at Hajj House located near Crawford Market, they rubbished the claim. "There is no employee named Mozawalla here," said an employee.

Mozawalla has been booked under the provisions of the Official Secret Acts. He has also been booked for conspiring against the country.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is still mum on the issue, after calling a press conference on the issue scheduled for this Thursday.
