A POLICE station has been functioning with the crucial post of senior inspector lying vacant for a good eight months.
No, that's not the state of affairs in some town in Bihar, like Bollywood potboilers show it. This is the reality at Mumbai's MIDC police station in Andheri (east).
The post fell vacant after Pradeep Suryavanshi was arrested on January 8 this year, and is still to be filled up. Suryavanshi was arrested in a fake encounter case that took place a few years ago.
Of the city's 88 police stations, MIDC is the only one which does not have a senior inspector in place.

The city has, in the past few weeks, seen more than four shootouts, including the one on Wednesday in which shipping firm owner Chand Madar was killed in broad daylight.
The top brass of Mumbai police has, however, not felt the need to fill in the senior inspector's post.
For the last six months, a junior officer has been deputed to officiate.
Lawless vicinity"Robberies are rampant in the area. Gangs of robbers roam the streets after nightfall. Only yesterday, they smashedu00a0 windshields of 10 cars on 'A' Cross Road," said a local dairy owner, Brijlal Tiwari.
There have been at least 50 robbery cases and other serious offences in the city in the past week. Chain-snatching is also being carried out with brazenness and land-grabbing and illegal construction too are rampant, said residents.
The highly sensitive Santacruz Export and Electronics Processing Zone falls under the jurisdiction of MIDC police station. Joint Commissioner of Police Rajnish Seth was not available for comment.
Job profilePOLICE sources said a senior police inspector's job is to supervise day-to-day progress of cases. Details of the same are shared with the assistant commissioner of police who suggests corrective measures if investigations are not moving in the right direction.
The Bombay Police Manual states that the role of the senior inspector is crucial for investigation purpose. His job also includes presenting a water-tight case before the prosecution.
