NEW PROPOSAL: Puja Sukhija plans to create mass awareness of environment laws

It's the age of environmental consciousness and the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) doesn't want to be left behind.

With the newly formed environment cell of the MRCC beginning to take root, its chairperson Puja Sukhija has, as one of its first measures, suggested that the committee present Tulsi (Holy Basil) saplings to dignitaries during official functions rather instead of bouquets.

"I suggested the measure to MRCC president Kripashankar Singh because I thought it made more sense to give something that is living and because the plastic and cardboard used in making bouquets harms the environment.
A Tulsi sapling, besides being sacred, is soothing, has medicinal value and breathes fresh life into the environment. We will do away with bouquets after the MRCC clears our proposal," said Sukhija.

Sukhija, who was appointed chairperson of the environment cell because of her extensive work with green NGO Oasis since 1997, also plans to create mass awareness of environment laws so that they can be implemented successfully. The cell's other programmes, which are in the pipeline, include encouraging people to adopt their neighbourhood and take responsibility for keeping it clean and green.

"The initiative is definitely good and we will consider adopting the practise of presenting a sapling of Tulsi for the official programmes of the MRCC," said Kripashankar Singh.
