After Cyclone Phyan last year, the city is set to experience a bout of November rain yet again as remnants of Cyclone Jal that showered over parts of South Mumbai, move up north.
Officials at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Colaba are now waiting for the next 36 hours to
see whether the well marked low pressure area off the coast of Maharashtra and Goa will intensify.
"Remnants of Cyclone Jal that brought around very heavy rain in parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have now merged into the Arabian Sea. The low pressure area has already brought heavy rain to parts of Goa and the south Konkan region," said V K Rajeev, director at IMD.
Now the low pressure area is also set to bring rains to the city as was experienced in part on Tuesday. "We are waiting for the next 24 to 36 hours to see if this low pressure area that has now formed over the Arabian Sea will intensify. If so, it will mean some cyclonic activity with rain and strong winds for the city," said Rajeev.
The city saw similar activity last year when Cyclone Phyan prompted city authorities to sound the alert for all coastal regions in Maharashtra in anticipation of heavy rain and flooding.
Meanwhile, government authorities in Andhra Pradesh evacuated about 6,000 people from danger areas. About 30 relief camps are running in seven coastal districts of the state after heavy rains claimed 11 lives.
