Thundershowers expected to last for only a few days; minor traffic and railway disruptions

Heavy rains lashed the city on Monday evening as a result of strong winds entering from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Most parts of the city received heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning causing holdups on the expressways.

Strong winds led to a tree being uprooted on the railway tracks at Koparkhairane between Thane and Vashi, leading to a temporary disruption of services on that line.

People run for cover in Thane as the city saw unexpected rain last evening

The showers were caused by amplification of a strong easterly wave from the south bringing moisture from the Bay of Bengal and westerly winds in the north bringing rain from the Arabian sea.

"There are no indication of showers over a prolonged period of time and we should expect the winds to cease within the first few hours of the showers," said R V Sharma, deputy director, IMD (western region).

"Daytime heat combined with the moisture led to the creation of thunderclouds.

We should expect the moisture to reduce from the westerly winds soon and the rains would continue for a day or two at most," said V K Rajiv, director at the MET department.

Today's Forecast

According to IMD, the city be partly cloudy today with a maximum temperature of 34 degrees.

Mulund recorded 20.2 mm of rainfall while Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminus (CST) recorded 11 mm of rain, according to the BMC.
